Ramseur's History

.Ramseur was named after Major General Stephen Dodson Ramseur, the youngest Confederate major general of the Civil War. However, the area was actually inhabited by Catawba Indians before the war. In 1840, Hezekiah Allen and Henry Kivett built a sawmill in the area, founding the settlement of Allen’s Fall. Later, the town became known as Columbia. This caused some confusion due to the town’s proximity to Columbia, South Carolina. Because of this, the town was renamed Ramseur in 1889.
